If a UCSB student is arrested or cited for an alcohol or other drug offense in Isla Vista or another area adjacent to campus, that student will receive a letter of concern from the campus with referral to sources of assistance. Approximately one week later a letter of concern containing notification of the student’s citation or arrest will be mailed to the student’s parents or guardians with an enclosure containing suggestions on how to address the issue with their student.

Letters issued under parental notification do not constitute a disciplinary action by the campus nor do they become part of a student’s disciplinary record at UCSB.

The goal of parental notification at UCSB is to enlist parental support for fostering more appropriate student behavior to create a safer community environment and reduce the many negative impacts of substance abuse.

• 25662 — Minor in Possession of Alcohol
• 25658(A) — Providing Alcohol to a Minor
• 25658.5 — Minor Attempting to Purchase Alcohol
• 4060 — Illegal Possession of Prescription or Prescription Drugs

Penal Code

• 647(F) — Public Intoxication Health and Safety Code
• 11357(B) — Possession Less than 1 oz. of Marijuana (if under 21 years of age)
• 11350 — Possession of Controlled Narcotics
• 11550 — Under the Influence of Controlled Narcotics

Santa Barbara County Ordinances

• 36-2 — Consuming Alcohol in Public
• 36-3 — Possession of Open Container in Public

California Vehicle Code

• 23152 (A) & (B) — Driving Under the Influence
• 21200.5 — Biking Under the Influence
