The SAM program helps students with risky patterns of alcohol and drug use achieve
a healthy relationship with alcohol & drugs. SAM is designed as a process group
where students share their experiences with alcohol and drugs with a counselor as
well as other SAM students. As opposed to CASE, which is mostly driven by educational
material, SAM has a more therapeutic focus. The program is designed for students
who are identified as at-risk by key university personnel, or have completed the
CASE program and experience additional alcohol or drug problems (e.g., a second
violation of alcohol and drug policy in residence halls, multiple parent notification
letters). In addition to these referrals, the SAM program is available to any UCSB
student and should also be considered for any student who may be struggling with
issues regarding alcohol or drugs. The students can be referred through a wide network
of concerned university professionals, including medical providers, student affairs
professionals, counselors, residential life staff, athletic coaches, academic advisors,
faculty, etc.
